In the southern and western sections of Idaho midsummer temperatures have been known to reach 112 degrees, but the dry air tends to moderate the effect of the heat. The winters in this sheltered area are mild, and the temperature, owing to equable winds from the Pacific, seldom falls below zero. The northern and eastern sections experience their greatest extremes in winter, when the temperature there may drop to 30 degrees below zero.

The Rocky Mountains and the Plains cover the state. The Rocky Mountains cover the greater part of Idaho south of the panhandle. The highest of the state’s peaks is Mount Borah at 12,655 feet, in the Lost River Range. The south-central and western sections of the state are included in the Columbia Plateau. This gigantic uplift was once covered with lava flows, which became so warped and faulted that the surface is today covered with innumerable ridges, crevices, dikes, and batholiths. The state offers much to a hunter and should be taken advantage of on your next trip.
