Northwest Territory, Canada Regulations

The Northwest Territory is a vast land area in Northern Canada. Most this area is south of the tree line, from the Mackenzie River delta in the Arctic Ocean to the southeastern part of the territory. With over 530,000 square miles, this land has much to offer the hunter.

The land is well covered by rich woods and minerals. Two of the largest lakes in the world, Great Slave and Great Bear lakes link to the Arctic Ocean by one of the world’s longest rivers, the Mackenzie. This river runs over 1,100 miles from it’s beginning in Great Slave Lake. Only part of the land is covered with forest. Above the tree line there is only small shrubs and bushes. The mountains lie to the west and swamps in the Mackenzie River Valley.

The present Northwest Territory has a cold climate; though the short summers are warm, the winters are long and very severe. From timber regions near the southern boundaries the vegetable life decreases to mosses and lichens in the Arctic zone.

The historical region of the north-central United States was formerly the “Old Northwest”. It extended from the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to the Great Lakes. Including what is now Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. The larger part of this territory was claimed by Virginia, New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. These claims long stood in the way of the adoption of the Articles of Confederation, since Maryland insisted that the territory should become a part of the United States before a new government was organized.

Northwest Territory is a unique place to hunt and should be experienced at least once in a hunter’s life. The hunting guides and outfitters will be able to give advice on the better places to hunt in Northwest Territory, Canada.
