Information on the Caribou and Habitat

Caribou, Kar uh boo, is the French-Canadian name for the wild reindeer of North America, which they hunted for years in the early part of that countries history. Like other reindeer, caribou are larger than true deer. These big game animals have broad hoofs to support them in deep snow and spongy tundra. Caribou have broader antlers than true deer, and the male’s antlers grow much larger than the female’s. The female caribou is the only American female deer that has antlers. The main types of caribou are the Barren Ground and the woodland.

Barren Ground caribou move in large herds far across the Arctic tundra from Newfoundland to Alaska. For days at a time, traveling caribou cover the country. This is why good caribou hunting guides and outfitters are a must, as they need to know their location to make a hunting trip or guided hunt a successful one. In summer they eat mostly grass and leaves of willow, dwarf birch, and other shrubs. In the winter they live mostly on lichens. The herds in western Alaska and northeastern Canada have become small, but elsewhere they are as large as ever.

It has been estimated that in Alaska and the Yukon there are 2,000,000 Barren Ground caribou. A bull can weigh over 300 pounds, and is 4 feet tall and 6 feet long. The cow is smaller than the bull, and usually gives birth to one calf in late May or June.

The woodland caribou is larger and darker than the Barren Ground caribou. Some experts think that the largest woodland caribou are a third type, called mountain caribou. This is the caribou most wanted and why a good outfitter or guide that offers trips or guided hunts are so valuable. They normally know where this big game is. Some woodland caribou grow 8 feet long and weigh more than 400 pounds, but have been know to reach 700 pounds They are found from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland to British Columbia. There are now only a few woodland caribou living in the extreme northern United States outside of Alaska.

The Northern Indians and Eskimos depend on the caribou to survive and hunt it daily. They eat its flesh and make soup from its marrow, and clothing and tents from tits hide. They use its bones for needles and knives; its horns for fishhooks, spears, and spoons; and its tendons for thread.

General Information on the Caribou

Scientific Classification: Caribou are in the family Cervidae. Woodland species is genus Rangifer, species R. caribou; the Barren Ground is R. arcticus.

Tips for Caribou Hunting

Tips from caribou hunting guides and outfitters are plentiful if you just ask for their advice. These people know this big game like the back of their hand as they hunt caribou for a living and should know the in’s and out’s. Here are just a few to help in trips and guided hunts.

  • Tip One: Never hunt alone. This sounds like obvious advise, but we all know there are many hunters out there that don’t keep safety in mind when hunting caribou or are on any other big game animal trips or hunts.

  • Tip Two: Keep the weather in mind. You are normally very far north and clothing is an important and sometimes lifesaving item in your supplies. The outfitter or guide that you hire should be able to keep up on upcoming weather reports to help you plan out a caribou trip.

  • Tip Three: Take along a compass. This can save your life if you get separated from your party, outfitter, or guide. Remember that you can be in the middle of the wilderness and if you get separated from your party then this little devise can save your life.

  • Tip Four: Once you have shot a caribou, make sure it is indeed dead. We have all heard of the hunters that thought their big game was dead and when they got up to it, they found it was just wounded. Caribou can attack if they feel threatened.

  • Tip Five: Your going to want a good scope on your rifle. Most cases your shot will be more then 100 yards away at least. Taking the time to sight in your rifle is a must. Many outfitters or guides know of places that you can set some equipment up to do this, but it is best to already have your gun sighted in before going out to hunt caribou.

  • Tip Six: Don’t forget your water. You may have to hike a ways to get to your hunting spot. Also remember that you are in the middle of wilderness country and it is not a forgiving place.

  • Tip Seven: Waterproof clothing or at the very least boots should be in your list of equipment. It will be a bad day when you find out that your feet are now wet from not having the right boots or that one of them have a hole in it and you didn’t know. Make sure that you know that the boots or clothing you wear is in good condition for your caribou hunting trip.

  • As we said, these are just a few tips for caribou hunting and trip preparation. The caribou hunting guides and outfitters that you contact will most likely have many more tips. Just ask them and most generally they will be more then happy to volunteer their knowledge. Above all else, Hunting-Trips-R-Us wants you to keep safe and have fun on your trip or guided hunt.
