Information on the Coyote and Habitat

Coyote: The coyote is considered a small game animal also known as prairie wolf and brush wolf, a North American wild dog. The coyote, Canis latrans, is native to a large part of western and central Untied States with a range extending north to Alaska and Canada and south to Costa Rica. All of these areas have coyote hunting guides and outfitters that are more then willing to help you plan a guided trip to their location. The coyote inhabits the plains, and desert regions, and broken woodlands, but is seldom found in deep forest, so most of the hunts are not as deep in the woodlands as other type of small game trips plan for. Some individuals of this species have been introduced into the Adirondack Mountains, where they have crossed with domestic dogs, producing a hybrid called coydogs.

The coyote somewhat resembles a timber wolf but is only about half its size. It is more slender and has larger ears and a more pointed face. An adult stands abut 21 inches {53 centimeters} at the shoulder, weighs 20 to 30 pounds {9 to 14 kg}, and measures about 32 inches {81 centimeters} in length, not including its 16-inch {41-centimeter} bushy tail. It has a grayish or tawny-colored coat of thick fur. These colors and speed help this predator in hunting pray along with escaping from danger.

The coyote is known for its evening “song”. At the close of every day it mounts the nearest knoll, sits on its haunches, and utters a series of prolonged calls or howls that are quite musical and carry for a remarkable distance. One animal starts his cries and others join in. After some time they become quiet and begin the hunt for the evening meal. Fruit, berries, and small animals are the coyote’s food. It also hunts the jack rabbits, ground squirrels, and gophers. Some coyote hunting outfitters and guides will bait areas to lour the animal to them. Trailing a rabbit, the coyote can lope along at 31 miles {49 km} an hour and has been known to attain a maximum speed of 43 miles {69 km} per hour.

Unfortunately, some states have made efforts to exterminate coyotes by allowing unlimited hunting, believing them to be dangerous to domestic animals. However, the extermination of these animals has led in recent years to a great increase of smaller game animals that do far more damage. Now more is known about the coyote and how it helps keep a balance in nature.

The mating season begins in February, and both parents take an active part in raising the family. The den or nursery is either under the roots of an old tree or among rocks but is at least 6 feet {1.8 meters} from the entrance. Pups are born about 60 days after mating. The usual number in a litter is about 6, but there may be as many as 19. Only the female enters the nursery, but the male keeps her well supplied with food by hunting during the day and night. As the pups grow older, they begin to eat solid food, and both parents become fully occupied in supplying it to them by going on hunts for other small game. A coyote is believed to mate for life and may live to an age of 13 years.

Scientific Classification: The coyote, Canis latrans, is classified in the family Canidae

Tips for Coyote Hunting

Coyote hunting tips are plentiful if you ask the outfitter or guide you have hired. But we have listed some basic ones that may be of help for those whom hunt by themselves. Keep in mind that these tips are to help our visitors but professional outfitters and guides can give you much more detailed information that should help increase the excitement of your coyote hunt.

  • Tip One: Plan out your coyote hunting trip and don’t just wing it. This can not only save you from having a hunt that doesn’t end up with a trophy, but from hiring a coyote guide or outfitter that doesn’t have the knowledge to help you in finding this small game before your trip has ended. Contact as many companies as possible before deciding. It is worth the added effort.

  • Tip Two: Dress for the location you will be in. Some states are normally warm, but in the mountain areas it can get quite cold. Bring the right equipment when on a hunt. As it may not only increase the joy of the trip, but may even by a lifesaver.

  • Tip Three: Some hunting guides and outfitters use bait to lour the coyote to a location for an easier shot. Make sure that the size of this small game animal is large enough. No one likes to go home with a small trophy when a longer wait would have brought a much bigger prize.

  • Tip Four: References from the outfitter or guide is always the best way to see how passed hunters did on one of their trips.

  • Tip Five: Coyote can hear very well so be very quite when waiting for it to show up. Of course the longer the shot the better chance the coyote will not here you.

  • Tip Six: Always have someone with you as a partner. Even if you don’t hire a hunting outfitter or guide, you should never be alone in the wilderness. Emergencies happen without warning.

  • Tip Seven: Always keep safety in mind when not only on a coyote trip, but in the planning out of a coyote hunt.

  • Tip Eight: Practice with your rifle. This seems obvious, but it is amazing to us how many sportsmen will go out and not practice shooting a new rifle or sighting in a new scope.

  • The tips above are just for helping our visitors out, but not designed to be the only tips you should follow. The coyote hunting guides or outfitters that we list and that you may eventually hire for their services will most likely have more detailed information about coyote hunts. Hunting-Trips-R-Us wants you to have a great time and hope that we have helped in some small way. Good Luck!!
