Coyote: This small game animal resembles a wild dog or wolf but not as large. It has a large population in California and hunting outfitters and guides are plentiful as well. The coyote {Canis Latrans} has a pointed muzzle, large pointed ears, long slender legs, and a prominent bushy tail. Its general color is grizzled gray above, with a dark cross on the shoulders and buffy under-parts. These traits make it harder to see when on a hunt for this small game.

The average coyote is about 40 inches {100 cm} long, including the 15-inch {38-cm} tail; 24 inches {60 cm} high at the shoulders; and 30 pounds {14 kg} in weight. But later scientists have learned that these small game animals were keeping other small game animals that were doing more damage to crops and other livestock at a lower population. Originally restricted to western North America from central Mexico to southern Canada, the coyote, an extremely adaptable small game animal, has extended its range considerably. Many sportsmen have started businesses offering guide or outfitter services to hunters in California.

After the mid-19th century it moved northward to Alaska and to the Yukon and the Mackenzie district of Canada. In the 20th century the coyote migrated eastward across Ontario to the St. Lawrence Valley, and to New York and the New England states {where it appears to have grown in size}. California Coyotes have a single annual breeding season, which runs from late January to early March. After a gestation period of 60 to 63 days, an average of about six pups is born in a burrow.
