The mean annual temperature ranges from 40 degrees in the northeast to 50 degrees in the west and 65 degrees in the south. The daily range of temperature is as much as 60 degrees in the mountain areas, and the winds are generally light. Nevada has the least rainfall then any other state.

The average altitude of the plateau is about 4,500 feet. Mountains varying in altitude from 1,000 to 10,000 feet rise from the plain, and distributed over it are numerous smaller ranges.
