Prince Edward Island, Canada is the smallest province of the country. Located in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and separated by Northumberland Strait from New Brunswick, on the east, and Nova Scotia, on the south. Its greatest length, from east to west, is about 145 miles; its breadth varies up to thirty-four miles, and its area is over 2,100 square miles. The coast line presents a remarkable succession of large bays and projecting head lands. The surface undulates gently, nowhere rising so high as to become mountainous, or sinking so low as to form a monotonous flat. The island is naturally divided into three peninsulas, and the whole is well suited for agriculture and pasturing, the forests now being of comparatively limited extent. The prevailing rock is reddish sandstone, but a large part of the surface is evidently alluvial.

The ocean acts much as a climate control for the providence. It functions like a gigantic heat pump, drawing warmth from the waters in the fall and early winter and cooling the air for much of the spring and summer. From January to early April the gulf and straits become ice covered. In summer the Island is visited most often by continental air from the west. The influence of moist Atlantic air often produces warm periods during the winter and cool weather during the summer.

The Prince Edward Island doesn’t normally have severe storms. One exception is the Atlantic storms. These bring very high tides (storm surges), strong winds, and heavy rains. About once every summer and early fall, dissipating hurricanes tracking along the Atlantic coast expend their energy and remaining rainfalls over the Island.

Winter temperatures become bitterly cold. Heavy snowfalls of 12 centimeters or more happen several times a year, with a couple of heavy snows at 25 centimeters or more. The birdgest snowfalls are usually associated with large, slow-moving weather systems and may last for up to 4 days. The winds can make matters worse at times during the winter months.

Many types of small game and big game animals can be hunted in the providence. You should be able to find a Prince Edward Island hunting guide or outfitter to help in your next trip.
