Alaska’s annual precipitation of rain and snow in some parts of the southeast averages 150 inches, providing abundant moisture for the great evergreen forests. At Sitka the temperature usually remains well above zero during the coldest winter months and may rise as high as 90 degrees in midsummer. The average annual range in the coastal region is from 20 to 60 degrees.

The interior of Alaska has long, cold winters and short, warm summers, with the thermometer generally dipping to –20 degrees in January and rising to 60 degrees or higher in July. Since the winds lose much of their moisture in crossing the Coast Ranges, the rainfall in both the plateau and Arctic regions is so light that some parts are semiarid. In the Arctic region the precipitation is sometimes as low as five inches a year. The Arctic Ocean and Bering Strait are navigable for only about two months in midsummer, when they are free from ice packs, but state does have much to offer the fellow hunter.

Many types of small game and big game animals can be hunted in the state. You should be able to find an Alaska hunting guide or outfitter to help in your next trip.
