Information on the Mule Deer and Habitat

Mule deer are from the mating of a whitetail and black tail deer. This big game is located in many areas of the United States and Canada. It is just one of many different species of the deer family. Most adult mule deer are brown or a very dark tan in color, or a varying degree between these. It helps them blend in better with their surroundings. This makes it more challenging on guided hunts or regular hunting trips. A good mule deer hunting guide or outfitter can help place you in the same areas as one of these animals giving you a better chance of going home with a great trophy from a trip.

As with other deer, the mule deer shares the same characteristics of the other species in their family, their antlers. They use them for defensive fighting along with offensive when they fight over the does. These are the prize trophy of hunts offered by mule deer hunting guides and outfitters. Antlers are not like normal horns of cattle. They are not solid bone tissue. They have many blood vessels in them that help them grow through out the year. In the spring the adult males start to grow new antlers that continue to grow until they reach their full size. During this process they are covered with a hairy skin, which is named velvet. This is where the blood vessels come in to play. They provide the nourishment for the antlers to grow. When they reach full size the blood flow is stopped then the velvet dies. The mule deer buck will try to rid itself of the velvet by rubbing it’s antlers against anything it can, including trees, rocks, or bushes. By autumn the process is complete and the antlers are fully developed. By the end of winter they start to decay at the base and thy will fall off. Thus starting the process over again in Spring.

Mule deer feed on most vegetation like twigs or leaves. They are cud-chewing and are limited on what they can eat. This big game is very quick and very skillful at detecting a hunter or other dangers. This skill is mainly from their sense of smell. They can swim just a quickly as other animals, but are also very curious, and can walk right up to a hunter with out knowing it.

When the mule deer mates it is usually in autumn of the year and they can have fierce battles. The battles are for control over the females or does, also to protect their harems from other bucks. Once the buck and doe have mated, the following spring the doe gives birth. Most does have one or two white-spotted fawns, which need protection at first. The does are very protective of the fawns until the fawns are old enough to use their speed to elude predators or hunters.

During winter there is not always food that is plentiful. The snow will cover most of the ground and mule deer will stomp the snow down so they can easily get to the grass underneath. They will continue this process until winter is over. This gives them the ability to find food. These areas are called “yards” and can be a good sign when searching for them to hunt. Many mule deer hunting guides and outfitters will supply food in the same areas for a period of time before hunting season starts. This makes guided trips for hunts more likely to be a success to bag this big game animal.

Scientific Classification: Mule deer belong to the same family as the Black Tale deer, which is the Cervidae. The mule deer is also classified as genus Odocoileus, species O. hemionus.
