Northwest Territory, Canada Polar Bear

The Polar Bear: The polar bear, Ursus maritimus, is some times placed in a genus of it own, Thalarctos. It inhabits Polar Regions of the Northern Hemisphere, which includes the Northwest Territory in Canada. {It is not found in the Antarctic.} This big game is offered by hunting guides and outfitters that are in different areas of the providence. The polar bears range varies with the seasonal changes in the southernmost limits of the polar ice. In summer it follows the receding ice closer to the North Pole; in winter it moves farther south along with the advancing ice. Although primarily an inhabitant of coasts and ice floes, polar bears may den inland in winter often as far as 5 miles {8 km}, and occasionally as much as 30 miles {48 km}, from the coast in Canada’s Northwest Territory. In summer, polar bears may also roam relatively far inland seeking berries, birds’ eggs, and other summertime foods. Theses season changes also makes it harder for a polar bear guide or outfitter to know where this big game is all the time. The hunting trip or guided hunt that they offer may include many days of hunting or may have a time limit. Each company is different.

Other aspects of this big game that make it harder to find on trips or guided hunts are some of the strengths that it has. The polar bear’s relatively longer legs, narrower forequarters, longer neck, and smaller, more flattened head are distinctive around bears. They can swim very far and are very quick in speed for their size, which should test the hunters’ ability to shoot at long distances. This is a good point to make and sportsmen should have some practice in for longer shots. Most outfitters and guides should be able to set up a shooting area to practice your longer shots if you ask them.

The Northwest Territory polar bear’s skin, nose, lips, footpads, and eyes are black, and its coat color varies from white, or sometimes grayish, to yellowish white or yellowish tan. Coat color often depends on the season, age {cubs have whiter coats than adults}, and other factors. For example, the yellowish tinge in the coat is thought to be due possibly to the effect of the nearly constantly shining summer sun.

Polar bears in the Northwest Territory may grow to be very large. However, they seem to vary in size geographically. The smallest bears are found in the Svalbard {Spitzbergen} region, with size increasing westward across Greenland and North America to the Bering Sea, where the largest polar bears exist. A similar size gradient, or cline, is assumed to exist eastward from Svalbard, across Siberia, to the Bering Sea. Male polar bears are often about 7.25 feet {2.2 meters} in head and body length, but can range from about 6.25 to over 8 feet {1.9 to over 2.4 meters} in length. This large size is what makes this big game so popular with the hunting guides and outfitters in the Northwest Territory and why they offer a wide assortment of trips and guided hunts to the area. Female polar bears are comparatively smaller, generally being from slightly less than 6 feet to about 6.5 feet {1.8 to 2.0 meters} in head and body length. Tail length in both sexes is from about 3 to 4 feet {0.9 to 1.2 meters}, but is said to reach 5.25 feet {1.6 meters} in the largest males. Adult males are frequently between 800 and 900 pounds {360 to 400 kg} in weight, but vary from approximately 650 to 1700 pounds {300 to 800 kg}. Adult females may average about 700 pounds {320 kg} in weight, but may be as small as 350 pounds {160 kg}.

You can contact each hunting guide and outfitter to see what kind of other hunts that they offer on a trip. Some of these companies are willing to travel very far distances for a sportsman along with offering services that can cover many things, including supplies. Make sure you research each company to see which one to pick for your polar bear hunt in the Northwest Territory.
