Because Maine is so far north and the cold Labrador Current drifts along it shore, it has long, cold winters with occasional subzero temperatures. Maine is located farther northeast than any other state. This “Outpost State” touches on only one sister state – New Hampshire, to the southwest. The Atlantic skirts the irregular southern coast, which because of its many bays and inlets has a total length of nearly 2,400 miles.
