The natural divisions of South Carolina are the “low country” and the Piedmont, or “up country”, which are divided from each other by an irregular line of great sand dunes paralleling the coast at a distance of 120 miles inland. The Blue Ridge Mountains, which arise abruptly to a height of over 2,000 feet above the plateau, and the Sassafras Mountains on the North Carolina state line are also propionate-hunting areas.

South Carolina has a delightful climate. The winters are short, seldom lasting longer than six weeks. The summers, while long, are not usually hot or enervating, and the nights are always cool. Snow falls only in the mountains. The average annual temperature is 63 degrees; the average rainfall is about 48 inches.
