Alaska Whitetail Deer
Alaska Whitetail Deer: White-tailed deer , Odocoileus virginianus, also known as the Virginia deer, is the common deer of eastern North America including Alaska. It is offered by Alaska hunting guides and outfitters throughout the states 586,000 square miles of land. The whitetail deer can range over most of the United States, southern Canada, Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. Many of these different countries hunt this big game. Sportsmen of all types plan a guided hunt for the whitetail deer. It is a comparatively small deer with uniformly tawny-colored fur which becomes heavier and grayer in the winter. These colors help hide it and also help it escape danger. Its antlers, are normally not very large, but on occasion can be very large in size. These larger size antlers are the trophies that hunting guides and outfitters in Alaska are looking for. These antlers rise on top of the head with the main beam extending directly forward and outward and the tip converging inward. Two or more short times rise erect from the main shaft. It has a comparatively long bushy tail which is conspicuously white on the underside. At the approach of danger, the tail is held tightly down and the animal steals away silently and inconspicuously. The moment it starts to run, the tail is carried aloft and waved from side to side – acting as a warning signal to other whitetail deer and game animals.
The white tail deer reaches its greatest size in the northern areas of North America like Alaska. This is where a good hunting outfitter or guide is worth their weight in gold on a trip or guided hunt. A whitetail deer may measure up to 46 inches {116 cm} high at the shoulder and weigh from 200 to 400 pounds {90-180 kg}. The smallest form, called the dwarf whitetailed deer, is found in Texas and does not exceed 50 pounds {23 kg} in weight.
Although a woodland big game animal, the white-tail deer is not found in the deep woods normally. It favors the sunny glades and meadows that border thickets, where it can browse on leaves and shoots of trees, bushes, and grasses. Alaska hunting Guides and outfitters are normally very aware of the characteristics of this big game and have planned for it. Hunting trips or guided hunts are very popular and these companies are normally very good at finding the best places in the state to go. Shy and elusive, this big game is rarely seen in groups of more then 4 or 5. Each deer has its home territory of about 300 acres {120 hectares}.
In the northern areas like Alaska, the breeding season of the whitetail deer begins in October with the stages fighting fierce battles for possession of the does. Infrequently the antlers of two stags become inseparable interlocked I a head-on charge and both animals starve to death. You may come upon bones and the antlers of whitetail deer in that position when on your trip. The young, weighing from 3 to 4 pounds {1.4 to 1.8 kg} each, are born about May. Depending upon the doe’s age, the number of young may vary; the first-born is always single, but the following year she may have two or sometimes three. In very rare instances a doe has been known to have as many as four fawns. The whitetail deer has a life expectancy of fifteen to twenty years, and a doe may have as many as thirty-one fawns during her first fourteen years.
