Kentucky and Virginia border Tennessee on the north and by Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi on the south. North Carolina lies to the east, and Arkansas and Missouri to the west. The eastern boundary is crossed by the Great Smoky Mountains, which are so called because of the bluish haze, which hovers over them.

Except in the mountains, Tennessee has a mild and equable climate, with an average January temperature of 39 degrees, and a July average of 79 degrees. The heaviest rains occur in early spring, when floods threaten on the Mississippi and its tributaries. The annual precipitation averages 47 inches.
